Liverpool defender Joe Gomez underwent surgery on a tendon in his left knee and now faces a battle to play again this season.

Gomez underwent a successful operation to repair the tendon on Thursday after sustaining the injury during training with England the day before.

Although scans revealed that the 23-year-old did not suffer any ligament damage, he is now facing a lengthy rehabilitation.

No timetable has been set for Gomez’s recovery, as Liverpool are not ruling out the possibility that the center-back will play again this season.

A statement from Liverpool said: “The problem was isolated in the Gomez tendon, with no other associated knee ligament damage.

“The operation to correct the damage, which took place in London on Thursday morning, was a success and the 23-year-old will make a full recovery.

“Gomez will begin a rehabilitation program with the Reds medical team immediately, with club staff carefully monitoring his progress.

“No time scale is being set for his comeback, although the issue is likely to rule him out for a significant part of the remainder of 2020-21.”

It’s a devastating blow for both the player and Reds boss Jurgen Klopp, who is now dealing with a major injury crisis at center-back.

Virgil van Dijk is unlikely to make a comeback this season after an ACL injury, while emergency defender Fabinho continues to recover from a hamstring problem.

Joel Matip is now Liverpool’s only available senior center-back, but has only started three Premier League games in 13 months.

It is the third time Gomez has been injured while on duty in England.

In October 2015, he missed 15 months after injuring his ACL playing for England Under-21s and in March 2018 he injured his ankle playing for the senior team against the Netherlands, ruling him out of the League final Champions of that season.
