Liverpool are hopeful that defender Joe Gomez will be able to play football again towards the end of this season.
The 23-year-old suffered a serious knee injury during England training, with no other player near him, at St George’s Park on Wednesday.
Final plans for his treatment and recovery have yet to be finalized after the Liverpool defender sprained his knee during training.
But after being evaluated by medical specialists on Wednesday, Gomez had some hope when told that his season was not necessarily over, news that will have him believe that he could still play for England at the European Championship next summer.
However, it is a serious blow for Jurgen Klopp, who already lost captain Virgil van Dijk during the season after a knee injury suffered in the Merseyside derby.
When asked about Gomez at his press conference Wednesday night, England manager Gareth Southgate said: “My immediate thoughts are with him as he has had some difficulties with injuries in the past.
“So we are praying that it is not long term. But we have to see.”

Sky Sports expert Jamie Redknapp told the Pitch to Post podcast:
“I am choked by Joe Gomez if it is a serious injury. He is a young man who has already had knee injuries and has come back brilliantly. I am a big fan of his, he seems a very good player and with his feet on the ground.” .
“I remember seeing him many years ago playing for Charlton in the FA Youth Cup and thinking ‘this is a star of the future’ and he certainly has shown it in Liverpool. I just hope it is nothing too serious.
“From England’s point of view, it’s a disappointment for Gareth Southgate, but for Jurgen Klopp, if this is long term and you don’t have Virgil, and you don’t have Joe Gomez, that puts a huge amount of stress on this team. a team that were red-hot favorites earlier in the year.
“It’s certainly going to turn things around and for everyone else involved, the two backs have been so impressive at times. It hasn’t been easy without Virgil right now, but without Virgil and without Gomez they will make it even more difficult.
“I suffered injuries playing for England and it is really difficult to deal with that because you are so proud to be there, but you also know that it is costing you an enormous amount of time in your career.”
“I broke my ankle twice playing for England, I broke my hamstring playing for England, it cost me an enormous amount of time. Of course you wouldn’t trade it for the world, but there is something so frustrating because it should be. Most prominent plays for your country, but when you come back injured it’s frustrating for everyone. “
Aldridge: Klopp has to buy, Henderson to substitute
Former Liverpool forward John Aldridge believes Klopp will have already planned to make a defensive signing in January and Gomez’s injury will have underscored the need for one.
Liverpool are without Van Dijk for several months; Joel Matip, Fabinho and now Gómez have been injured in the first period of the season.
Matip is Liverpool’s only first-period regular central defender, but Nathaniel Phillips, 23, and Rhys Williams, 19, have impressed when they substituted this season.
“I think you have to [buy in January]Said Aldridge Sky Sports News. “With all due respect to Joel Matip, he doesn’t have a great injury record. Fabinho can go in there. (Jordan) Henderson and (Gini) Wijnaldum have played there. The youngsters have done wonderfully. But in the long run they are. Are they good enough, I don’t know.
“I think you have to. But I think [Jurgen Klopp] i knew that before [Gomez’s injury]. It just highlights the problem. “
Liverpool will face Premier League leaders Leicester in their next game after the international break and could be without three of their four favorites.
Trent Alexander-Arnold is also a doubt after injuring his calf during the 1-1 draw against Manchester City on Sunday.
Aldridge believes Jordan Henderson would be better prepared to deal with Jamie Vardy and company before Phillips and Williams.
He added: “Heading into Liverpool, Liverpool scares the teams. So it’s not that the teams are going to go out and fly Liverpool. Leicester in the next game and (Jamie) Vardy is a little scary.
“Personally I would go with Henderson [vs Leicester] but the coach knows it better and as long as he has put in the youngest they have not disappointed him. It would be difficult for the young [to face Vardy]. “
How is Liverpool’s match schedule?
While the extent of Gomez’s injury has yet to be determined, it is another defensive blow for Liverpool.
The winter transfer window opens on January 2 and the Reds could be in the defender market if Gomez also faces a long spell on the sidelines, but what are their games like until then?
Jurgen Klopp’s team will return to action on Saturday, November 21 when they face current league leaders Leicester, who are just one point and two places away in the Premier League table.
In December Liverpool will face Wolves and Tottenham at home, as well as tricky trips to Crystal Palace and Newcastle between their Premier League matches. They will also face Southampton on Saturday January 2, the day the winter transfer window opens.
Of course, there is also the group stage of the Champions League to face before the new year. Liverpool have three wins out of three so far, and have two home games to come: first, against Atalanta on Wednesday 25th November, before Ajax on Tuesday 1st December. A final trip to Midtjylland follows on Wednesday, December 9.
