Joe Cole says Chelsea’s impressive start to the Premier League season has come down to two men

Joe Cole believes both Frank Lampard and Roman Abramovich deserve a lot of credit for Chelsea’s impressive start to the season.

The Blues won 2-0 at Newcastle to record their sixth win of the season and for the top, at least momentarily.

Lampard is only in his second year as Chelsea manager, but was heavily supported in the summer.

More than £ 250 million was spent on the likes of Timo Werner, Kai Havertz and Hakim Ziyech, as West Londoners made up for lost time after last summer’s transfer embargo.

And Cole has credited Lampard for putting the gears together and Abramovich for backing his young manager.

“They look so good. We’ve sung the praises of Thiago Silva and Reece James, but they are all scoring in attacking positions. It’s a very stable boat at the moment, “he said on BT Sport.

“Frank has to take a lot of credit for that. The property has to take a lot of credit for that for staying with Frank, just giving him the money to spend.”

“In that first season, he did a great job, bringing in the youngsters, bleeding them, bringing stability and now he has added the quality of Ziyech and Havertz.

“Chelsea now seem like a real threat, I don’t think people are wrong to say that Chelsea will yell at it at the end of the season.”

Roman Abramovich invested large amounts in player transfers

“There is so much quality in the whole team now.”

Chelsea have only won the title twice since 2010, with José Mourinho in 2015 and in 2017 when Antonio Conte was in charge.

The Blues have continued to rack up a great deal of silverware, but have shown signs that they might be up for another challenge in what is a rare season.
