Germany coach Joachim Low has demanded that his team reach at least the semi-finals at next summer’s delayed European Championship.
Euro 2020 was delayed 12 months due to the coronavirus pandemic and the Germans are among the favorites to lift the trophy at Wembley next summer.
But Low’s team has only won one of its five games since international football resumed in September with an error-filled 3-3 draw with Switzerland on Tuesday night, the latest disappointing result.
But Low says his team’s recent downfall has not changed his expectations for Euro 2020 and has demanded that they reach at least the semi-finals.
“It was a very high intensity game,” Low said at his post-game press conference.
Both parties took many risks, but there were also several mistakes. We started the game off badly, but showed real character to come back, which was good to see.
However, we made several mistakes on defense. Our plan was to play with a certain element of risk, but we need to correct those mistakes.
“We fought hard to get back in the game. You can learn a lot from setbacks. We need to improve our communication and instructions.
“When we go to the Euro, our goal is to get as far as possible, but reaching the semi-finals is the minimum goal.
‘This team has a lot of potential. We need to correct some things, but then I think there is a lot to be excited about. ‘
Germany won the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, but was later defeated in the semi-finals of Euro 2016 by France. They also crashed in the group stage of the 2018 World Cup in humiliating fashion.
Low’s team had to come back twice Tuesday night to win a 3-3 draw with Switzerland in their Nations League group game.
The Swiss took an early lead through Mario Gavranovic and Remo Freuler added a second before goals from Chelsea’s Timo Werner and Kai Havertz tied the score.
Gavranovic then took his second solo for Bayern Munich star Serge Gnabry to earn a point for Germany.
The result places Germany one point behind Spain, leader of Group Four of League A, which remains with seven points after losing 1-0 away to a Ukrainian team now with six points, while the Swiss, still without winning , they remain last with a colon.
Havertz praised his team’s effort to salvage a draw, but insisted they must toughen up at the rear.
“We have to defend better, defend smarter and smarter,” he added.
But we keep coming back, we show a strong mentality. We need more patience, but today there were many good signs. We will continue working on it. ‘
