The national president of the People’s Progressive Party (PPP), Nana Ofori Owusu, has called on the Ghanaian government to remove the Basic Education Certificate Exam (BECE).

Making their presentations on Peace FM’s ‘Kokrokoo’, Nana Ofori posited that the BECE is one of the main factors contributing to streetism in Ghana.

He stressed that it is unnecessary for high school students (JHS) to write final exams explaining that many children are on the streets selling because they could not pass the basic exam and therefore could not continue their education.

“We have to abolish this BECE. The examination is not necessary … The statistics from last year and the previous year, 40,000 failed. The previous year about 45,000 and the year before, it was more than 100,000. This is a very perverse system … PPP thinks this BECE thing should be abolished “, he told Kwami Sefa.

The national president of PPP reported that JHS students should receive an automatic pass to upper secondary schools.

“You cannot have an educational policy that separates children from school to stay at home. If you are examining in terms of where their interests and strengths lie, it is a different topic. But if you are examining to make them someone go ahead and leave others behind, it is dangerous sifting … You cannot have a system where at the age of 13, some children are at home and sell bread, dog chains, etc. on the streets. No I have this system because it is a perverse system. The system is not for most of us, it is for the little ones. ” he said.

Meanwhile, this year’s Basic Education Certificate Exam (BECE) began on Monday, September 14, 2020 and will end on Friday, September 18, 2020 nationwide for all high school seniors (JHS ).
