After a long wait for the final declaration of the 2020 presidential results, the Election Commission finally released the result on Sunday night.

At a press conference at the commission’s headquarters in Accra, the president, Jean Mensa, who was flanked by MPs, made the big announcement.

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) standard-bearer was announced as president-elect, followed by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) standard-bearer, John Dramani Mahama.

The difference in the polls is 6,730,413 which represent 51.595% for Akufo-Addo, against 6, 214, 889 which represent 47.366% for John Mahama.

However, these elections were held without the election for the Techiman Sur electoral district, the results of which were still in dispute. However, Ms Mensa explained that if the constituency’s 128.18 votes were added to those of the second candidate, she would only get 47.873% of the total votes cast, while her opponent, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, would get 50.8%.

Read Jean Mensa’s explanation of the results stated below:

“Ladies and gentlemen, currently, the election results that we have declared exclude that of the Techiman South constituency, which has a total voter population of 128.18. Such election results are not ready because they are being contested, as such, the compilation is incomplete.

However, it is important to note that the difference between the total number of votes between the first and second candidate is 515,524 votes.

As a result, if we were to add the full 128.18 results to the result of the second candidate, it would not change the result of the elections, thus our statement of the results of the 2020 elections without Techiman South.

If we had to collate all the results of the South Techiman constituency and add them to that of the second candidate, Mr. John Dramani Mahama, he would obtain 47.873% of the total votes cast and Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo would obtain 50.8% of the total of votes cast. On that basis we say that the outcome of the elections will not change.

Distinguished ladies and gentlemen, on the basis of the previous election results and the power that has been given to me as Chairman of the Ghana Electoral Commission and scrutineer of the presidential elections, it is my duty and an honor to declare Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo -Addo as President-elect of the Republic of Ghana. May God bless our homeland Ghana and make it great and strong. May peace reign, “he added.
