Jamie Redknapp has criticized the Arsenal team saying there are only ‘three or four players’ who can be trusted within the team.
The Sky Sports expert made the comments after the Gunners’ strong 4-1 Carabao Cup exit to Manchester City.
Arsenal are in terrible shape, they have not won in the league since the beginning of November and are in 15th position, just four points above the relegation zone.
The accumulated negative results are putting increasing pressure on coach Mikel Arteta, but Redknapp feels that if he were replaced, any incoming coach would have a hard time trusting the majority of the team’s players.
He said on Sky Sports: ‘The last win they got was against Manchester United on November 1, and in their defense I thought that day it seemed like they could be into something special here.
Then all of a sudden things are gone and they seem lacking in confidence. The biggest problem is that there are only three or four players. If you were a coach, you could say “I can trust”.
‘Because I can tell you what will happen next time (a new coach) comes in, David Luiz will play well for ten or 11 games and you will say’ he is a good player ‘, then he will start to make mistakes because he will get bored.
‘You’ll have (Granit) Xhaka and think’ wow, he’s a good player too ‘, then he’ll be sent off. The coach will probably bring Mesut Ozil in and say ‘we shouldn’t have left him out in the first place’.
He will do it for a couple of games and then he will get bored too. That will be the problem with this team. Too many of them, no matter what you do, will disappoint Arsenal.
“It’s a team full of kids right now and I feel sorry for the young players. So the coach needs to stay with him and give him time to take out a lot of the players who aren’t good enough.
“I keep hearing about locker room riots, I keep hearing that there is someone in the locker room giving information.
‘If you have that, you have big problems, you have no chance. You have to get rid of those players as quickly as possible and it is not easy to do.
‘If you get rid of the manager coming in? Who is out there?
Former Manchester City player and co-expert Micah Richards claimed that Arsenal’s FA Cup win over Chelsea “plastered” at the club.
He added: ‘I still have some faith (in Arteta) because I’ve seen him in training camp in Man City, I know he has something.
I don’t know if he is a better coach or if time will tell. But it’s disheartening to see it like that, but you can’t just blame Arteta. ‘
Arteta was named Gunners coach a year ago, replacing Unai Emery after one season as Pep Guardiola’s assistant at Manchester City.
The former Arsenal midfielder started well at the Gunners and finished the coronavirus-stricken season on top by winning the FA Cup against Chelsea.
Things started off brilliantly this season by winning the Community Shield against Liverpool and their first two Premier League games.
Yet they have only won four of their 14 league games so far and have been unable to win in their last seven games in a period where scoring has been difficult and there has been poor discipline on the field.
