Jamie Carragher says Chris Wilder of Sheffield United would be his choice to be named Premier League Manager of the Year after his success at Bramall Lane.

The individual award recognizes the work done by those on the bench and few have received more applause than Wilder.

Carragher, who spent his entire career at Anfield, gave Jurgen Klopp a special mention.

The German has presided over an unforgiving year that has seen Liverpool drop just five points.

After being promoted as runner-up to the Championship last year, Sheffield United is challenging for a place in next season’s Champions League.

Only three clubs have lost fewer games than them this season while battling players like Chelsea, Tottenham and Manchester United for a seat at the top table in Europe.

And Carragher believes that the level of excess achievement is the reason the 52-year-old should receive the award.

“I could definitely look at Jurgen Klopp if he returns the title to Liverpool,” he told Sky Sports’ The Football Show.

“Is Liverpool winning the league from last year and is it as close and winning the Champions League as great an accomplishment as Sheffield United reaching the Premier League, hoping to be in a relegation bout and very close to the positions of the Champions League?

“If the season unfolds, I think they really have a game on hand at Manchester United and if they won they would go above United and who knows what will happen to City next season.

“They are a team that is fighting for the places in the Champions League, they haven’t spent much, even compared to the other teams really promoted.”

“In fact, I think Chris Wilder should be the manager of the season if he finished now, or if they went better and beat Manchester United with that game in hand and ended the season with force.”

“It’s a story that we don’t see as often as we did before. Yes, we had Leicester a few years ago, which is a story that will not be matched or beat, but in terms of upcoming and challenging Champions League teams put I think which is an amazing job Chris Wilder has done. ”
