Newcastle United will reportedly join the race for sidelined Real Madrid James Rodriguez.
With the Magpies in charge of a Saudi-backed consortium, many big names have been linked to a move to St James’ Park. In fact, it felt like a matter of time before the Colombian’s name joined that list.
Now, according to Caracol and Goal, Rodríguez is on the radar of potential new Newcastle owners.
Snail suggests that Newcastle is open to the signing of the Real star, who has fallen out of favor with Zinedine Zidane at the Bernabéu. A € 32 million (£ 28 million) price has been mentioned for a player who has also been linked with Everton and several other Premier League teams this summer.
The aim is to report much the same, suggesting that Newcastle is investigating a possible deal, but that Real Madrid is more likely to want a fee in the region of € 40m (£ 35m).
Of course, Rodríguez is a great talent who blew up the world at the 2014 World Cup. Former Newcastle cult hero Faustino Asprilla has not forgotten his talent, and told Blu Radio last month (as reported by Goal) that his compatriot “could play anywhere” given his talent.
“James needs to go where he will play, a club where the coach has expressly asked for it and wants him in his team. Not where it will be an impulsive firm, bought at the whim of the president. With his talent, he could play anywhere. “
Newcastle United fans will rightly take this latest report with a pinch of salt, as any currently underprivileged top player at his current club appears to be tied in with a Tyneside switch that is spinning the money right now.
But if the club begins to move forward with a potential move for the midfield dynamo, fans at St James’ Park would be right to get excited.
