It is amazing how the government in power always trusts the various state institutions but does not trust these same institutions when they are in opposition.
Various institutions such as the police, the army, the Electoral Commission, the judicial service, among others, have received much criticism from politicians, especially from the opposition.
In 2012, the NDC had so much confidence in the police, the military and even the electoral commission. The then opposition party, the PNP, did not trust these institutions. This changed when the PNP came to power in 2017. I don’t know what these institutions did differently but they started to trust them, but then again the opposition NDC began to express their discontent with these institutions as well.
The same NDC that believed the Election Commission did a good job in 2012 now believes the Election Commission is not doing a good job in 2020, while the PNP, which discredited the Election Commission in 2012 for not being fair, is now showering praise on the Election Commission. Commission for being fair.
The question in my mind now is, does that mean that such institutions are not independent as we are led to believe?
Is it that the ruling party uses these institutions to carry out its agenda? Is it the thinking of the opponents that the incumbent government uses the institutions for its benefit?
Are there systems to ensure that such institutions are not manipulated by “great men”?
Are we safe in this country with so much mistrust among the ruling class?
I think it is time that we look at these issues and begin to find a lasting solution to these problems. If we do not address these issues now and allow the cracks and mistrust to deepen, one day we will wake up and there will be no Ghana.
One solution I would recommend is to create a system that appoints the heads of those institutions rather than being appointed by the president. The challenge is, if the president is the one appointing you, you may have to carry out his orders.
This requires national deliberation.
God bless our homeland Ghana.
