‘It’s up to Pogba to decide’: French coach Deschamps is not interested in Raiola’s comments

The latest comments from the midfielder’s agent about his desire to leave Old Trafford were of little interest to the French manager.

Didier Deschamps said the agents can “say what they want” after Paul Pogba’s representative claimed the French international wants to leave Manchester United perhaps in January.

Mino Raiola gave an interview to Tuttosport, to be released in full on Tuesday, stating that United should let the 27-year-old leave when the transfer window opens, as he has no intention of extending his contract beyond 2022.

Pogba, who has scored two goals in 13 appearances this season, has been regularly linked with moves to Real Madrid, Paris Saint-Germain and former club Juventus.

“Paul is unhappy … He has to change teams; he has a change of scene,” Raiola said. “He has a contract that expires in a year and a half, but I think the best solution for the parties is to sell it in the next market.”

However, Pogba’s international coach Deschamps is not interested in Raiola’s comments, insisting that Pogba’s current status as a United player is the only thing that matters.

“If I begin to react to the reactions of the agent, the uncle, the dog, the grandfather or the grandmother … they say what they want,” he said at a press conference. “For me, the important thing is the player. He has to make professional decisions.

“It is early December and Paul is in Manchester, although we don’t know what could happen.

“Some may change clubs. I can give an opinion if they ask me, but certainly not advice. It is their career and it is up to them to make their decisions.”

Deschamps is happy to see French striker Olivier Giroud impress at Chelsea, with the 34-year-old hitting a streak of six goals in three games.

“We often talk about Olivier. They often criticize him. I say it over and over again, a lot of things are unfair to him,” said the coach.

“He has this strength of character. He’s done his best to stay athletic. When asked, he scores. When he doesn’t score, he’s always helpful.”

“I always thought it was better to have him with you than against you. I’m glad he’s having a happier time, hoping it lasts.”

Deschamps spoke after his France team faced Ukraine, Finland, Bosnia-Herzegovina and Kazakhstan in qualifying for the 2022 World Cup.

The holders, ranked second in the world, are expected to go through Group D, but Deschamps refuses to let go.

“We can have different interpretations of a tie,” he said. “We know Ukraine and Finland very well, as we got to know them recently. But we have never played Kazakhstan, for example. The trips will be very long.

“We will have to wait until Tuesday night to have the schedule. This can bring additional difficulties. I am not going to jump on the roof. You always have to have enough humility and respect for these teams.”

“France is the favorite, but we will have to do whatever it takes on the ground. We are seeded, so obviously we are supposed to be the best team. We will have to see if this is an advantage or a disadvantage.”
