The former Vice Chancellor of the University of Cape Coast (UCC), Professor George KT Oduro, has described Captain Smart as ignorant and mischievous for the accusations made by the radio host and journalist against the running mate of the opposition Democratic National Congress, Professor Jane Naana. Opoku-Agyemang.
Captain Smart recently revealed on the radio that Professor Opoku-Agyemang wrote to UCC management requesting the renewal of her contract as a teacher.
According to Captain Smart, the NDC running mate received the August and September salary payment even though she never worked during the period, having terminated her part-time contract with the university.
Captain Smart expressed surprise that Professor Opoku Agyemang, having been appointed as a selected running mate, will write to the University requesting the renewal of the contract.
But reacting to Captain Smart’s statements, Professor Oduro, professor of Educational Leadership at the UCC, cited the journalist’s ignorance and indicated that he would not have made the statements if he had known how the University administration worked.
“Initially, when I heard the news, I laughed, but then I felt that it was propaganda in which he (Captain Smart) was participating only to tarnish the name and reputation of the woman,” said Professor Oduro in a telephone interview with Benjamin Tetteh Nartey on Thursday October 15, 2020 on GBC Radio Central.
Explaining his point, Professor Oduro said that the appointment of professors at the university level is for a period of four to six years and is subject to renewal, adding that no regulation prohibits anyone from being a professor and running for political office.
Citing the situation of the current Minister of Zongo, Prof. Oduro said that Dr. Mustapha Hamid only applied for secondment when he was appointed Minister of Information and even with that, he requested a leave of absence.
“The Executive Secretary of the National Accreditation Board is a parliamentary candidate, but has not resigned from his post. These people can only resign if they win to become vice president or member of parliament, “he added.
In response to claims for salaries paid to Professor Naana Opoku-Agyemang by the University, Professor Oduro said that the professors who are awarded post-retirement contracts are not necessarily professors, but for Ph.D. supervision purposes.
“Now that she’s the NDC running mate, the government doesn’t pay her, and so if she oversees her PhD students and the university pays her, there is nothing wrong with that.
“When your contract at the university is about to end, the university will write to you to let you know and ask if you want to reapply. Second, your department head must also demonstrate that their services are necessary, and third , there must be a medical report that indicates that you have not yet reached 70 years of age, but if you are in good health, you can reapply for the renewal of your contract, “he said.
He further explained that a request for a contract extension does not necessarily mean that an extension will be granted and added that “for Captain Smart to order Prof. Opoku-Agyemang to go and withdraw her contract renewal request is pure ignorance and mischief.”
He emphasized the orderly handling of administrative matters at UCC and said that there is always the guarantee of due diligence when it comes to contracts and salary payments.
