The experienced journalist Abdul Malik Kweku Baako has criticized the Deputy Secretary General of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Boamah Otokunor, for the latter’s suspicions about the position of his party’s presidential candidate, John Dramani Mahama, on the ballot of vote.

On Tuesday, October 20, 2020, the Electoral Commission (EC) held an event for qualified political parties that attend the general elections in December to select the position of their presidential candidates on the ballot for the next elections.

Candidates include President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), former President John Dramani Mahama of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Christian Kwabena Andrews (Trade Union Movement of Ghana), Brigitte Akosua Dzogbenuku (Party of the Progressive Peoples), Akua Donkor (Ghana Freedom Party), Nana Konadu Agyeman Rawlings (National Democratic Party), Hassan Ayariga (All Peoples Congress), Ivor Kobina Greenstreet (People’s Convention Party), Henry Herbert Lartey (Great Consolidated People’s Party), Percival Kofi Akpaloo (Ghana Liberal Party), David Asibi Ayindenaba Apasera (National People’s Congress) and an independent candidate, Alfred Kwame Asiedu Walker.

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) chose the first position on the ballot, while the largest opposition Democratic National Congress represented by the party’s deputy general secretary, Peter Boamah Otokunor, selected the number two (2) position for his match.

The Ghana Trade Union Movement ranked third, the Convention People’s Party ranked fourth, the Ghana Freedom Party ranked fifth, the Great Consolidated People’s Party ranked sixth, the People’s Congress ranked seventh, the Ghana Liberal Party, National People’s Congress, Progressive People’s Party, National Democratic Party and Independent candidate Alfred Kwame Asiedu Walker will rank eighth, ninth, tenth, eleventh and twelfth respectively on the ballot.

The NDC Deputy Secretary General reportedly accused the EC of colluding with the government to ensure that President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo ranks first on the ballot, while Mr. John Mahama ranks second place.

Addressing the subject of Peace FM’s “Kokrokoo”, Kweku Baako questioned the meaning of Otokunor’s plot.

He asked if the second-place NDC presidential candidate also meant that the NDC contacted commissioners behind closed doors and arranged for Otukonor to elect second place, as the party is now running on the political mantra; “The Second Coming of John Mahama”.

” There are certain things that you don’t even entertain yourself. That’s why I say maybe it’s for comic relief … It irritates … It’s too much, constant complaints, rumors … Sometimes some level of quality is expected from the party, “said Baako.

He described Otukonor’s argument as “kid stuff.” You can imagine the way we are trying to make sense of it. An absurdity and we are trying to question this absurdity to see if it makes any sense. And you can see that it doesn’t even make sense; it is so difficult to even question this kind of absurdity. It’s just not fair”.
