Former Ghana FA Vice President Joseph Ade Coker has sparked controversy by claiming that paying a substantial amount of money for a “certified white male black coach” is “irrational” and calls for a drastic reduction in entitlement to Black Stars coach Charles Akonnor.
The tough and outspoken politician insists that it is ridiculous for a national team coach to receive a higher salary than Ghanaian leader Nana Akufo Addo.
Ade Coker has entered the debate after current Black Stars coach CK Akonnor was forced to accept a pay cut of 40% of his monthly salary of $ 25,000.
But the former president of the Great Olympics, Joseph Ade Coker, claims that paying such large sums of money for a “black man certified as a white man” is ridiculous.
“What does the country get from Black Stars? If Black Stars is winning trophies with a world-class coach and we are paying huge sums of money, that’s fine. But if it is a local coach with a certificate … and we are paying such amounts huge when they can’t better compete against their foreign counterparts, then we should definitely look at the Black Stars coach pay structure, especially with all the difficulties facing our economy. Because with all the money the country invests in soccer, there is absolutely no no benefit. ” Greater Accra regional chair of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) angered Accra-based Angel FM
He added: “If the President of Ghana receives 20,000 Ghana Cedis at the end of the month, why should a local Ghanaian coach with the white man’s certificate receive $ 25,000? It is therefore irrational that the Black Stars manager receives more pay than the President of Ghana. In terms of trophies, what is there to show? I ask.
“So it is a mismatch. I would suggest that our resources are distributed on the sports field … from which we can benefit.
“We do not have players with international quality to deserve the money we are paying them. The money should be used to develop sports at the lower level.
“We must look at the level of the economy and structure a salary system for coaches, after all, coaches are local coaches with foreign certificates.
“If any worker gets a PhD from a foreign country and decides to work here in Ghana, they will be paid according to the salary structure here and not according to what is paid abroad.”
Akonnor has agreed to accept the pay cut ahead of his first official match against Mali in an international friendly next month.
The former Asante Kotoko coach who was appointed earlier this year receives a monthly salary of $ 25,000.
