The opposition’s largest National Democratic Congress (NDC) has said that the Akufo-Addo-led PNP government plans to legalize the operations of ‘Okada’, its campaign promise, but the Deputy Minister of Information has discredited that claim.
He explained that the consultative meeting of the Minister of Transport with stakeholders, industry players and interest groups was aimed at determining the risk factor in Okada business operations and finding the best way to address the problem.
Speaking in Ok FM’s The morning show ‘Ade Akye Abia’, Pius Enam Hadzide, highlighted that the consultation with stakeholders helped the Ministry of Transport to know that accidents involving Okada are three times higher and fatalities 16 times higher, which makes business riskier than any other mode of transportation.
He noted that the consultation with stakeholders in the Okada business did not mean that the Akufo-Addo government had considered legalizing the business; acknowledging that some people, even in government, thought it wise to legalize Okada’s business.
“The fact that we had a stakeholder consultation in the Okada business did not mean that we are bringing in the Okada business. I’m sure the NDC didn’t understand our stakeholder consultation. We only seek to establish that we do not do things on impulse without thinking carefully and deeply and without realizing the true implications and ramifications of that political movement. . . “ He explained.
He hinted that by considering the risk associated with Okada’s business, the Akufo-Addo government is finding a way to get them jobs, as many of the people who work with Okada wish to have another business.
“Many of the Okada cyclists are doing the Okada business due to lack of jobs … they are saying that it is not their wish to use Okada for business”, he stated.
