Two goals behind at home to Torino, Inter appeared to be heading for another defeat until a surprising comeback secured a 4-2 victory in Serie A on Sunday.
The Nerazzurri came into the match with just one win of their last eight in all competitions, and goals from Simone Zaza and Cristian Ansaldi appeared to have accumulated more misery on Antonio Conte’s side.
However, quick strikes from Alexis Sánchez and Romelu Lukaku tied the hosts, before the latter put Inter ahead from the penalty spot for the first time. A late goal by Lautaro Martínez brightened the scoreboard and put the game out of doubt.
Inter must make the comeback count
While their impressive counterattack will give them a confidence boost, Inter must now use this to rekindle both their Serie A aspirations and their stuttering Champions League campaign.
With just one win against Genoa to show for their effort since the second round of the season, Inter have struggled for far too long and appeared to be in danger of losing even more points.
Lukaku’s return to fitness gives Conte a significant boost ahead of a series of challenging matches, starting with a crucial home draw against Real Madrid in the Champions League on Wednesday.
As matches unfold rapidly, the momentum generated by the second-half display at Stadio Giuseppe Meazza may be of great importance beyond Sunday’s game.
Torino can’t afford another collapse
Despite being two goals ahead with more than an hour to play, even the most ardent Torino fan had to fear the worst, and that nightmare came true. The Granatas have doubled up with every lap and have lost an incredible 14 points from winning positions this season, from just eight games.
Although they were deprived of the talismanic striker Andrea Belotti after he stopped in the warm-up, Torino were worth their lead before capitulating under pressure.
The defensive organization and the resistance of the first half disappeared in one instance and the Granata remained clinging, before succumbing to the offensive prowess of Inter. In fact, seven of their last 11 goals have come after the 80-minute mark, suggesting that concentration and fitness issues are costing them.
The defeat leaves them in the relegation zone and without a change of mentality threatens to have a long season ahead.
The Inter post must build momentum after the comeback victory first appeared on Forza Italian Football.
