Tamale South Minority Leader and Member of Parliament (MP) Haruna Iddrisu said his fellow MP and Majority Leader in Parliament, Osei Kyei Mensah Bonsu, will keep his seat despite challenges from an independent aspirant to the parliamentary seat of Suame.

George Prempeh, with ties to the ruling New Patriotic Party (PNP), is running as an independent candidate, determined to remove Mr. Kyei Mensah Bonsu, a deputy from Suame and head of government affairs.

Mr. Prempeh could not contest the PNP primaries because the delegates supported the current deputy from Suame not to oppose it.

However, the minority leader, during a comment in parliament, suggested that attempts to overthrow Suame’s incumbent deputy would be useless.

He spoke during the motion for the House to adopt the Trade Statement by the third week.

Haruna advised lawmakers to ensure a balance between their presence in their constituencies and work in the House as they struggled to retain their seats in the upcoming elections.

Iddrisu also called on state ministers and the majority leader to prioritize the bills for the House rather than sealing the House with bills in what he called “the November of the four-year term.”

He said bills like the National Ambulance Bill and the National Blood Transfusion Bill could wait before critical government bills like the State Council and anti-money laundering bills.

Mr. Iddrisu commended Attorney General and Minister of Justice Gloria Akufo, who was present in the Chamber, for writing to inform him of the legislation she would like to work on.

Mr. Kyei Mensah Bonsu announced that 60 bills were scheduled for the meeting and that there had been a meeting for ministers to prioritize bills scheduled for the House.

He explained that the national blood transfusion bill had been incorporated due to the demands of the time.

Meanwhile, Majority Leader Whip Kwasi Ameyaw Cheremeh, reading the Business Statement on behalf of the Majority Leader, announced that the House would meet on Monday, October 26, 2020.
