The leadership of the opposition Democratic National Congress (NDC) says it has solved all the problems that have recently sparked discussions and raised concerns about the party, especially the work of the minority caucus.
This follows a meeting between the party’s Council of Elders, the entire Parliamentary Caucus, and the party leadership.
“The meeting was held in a healthy environment in which the concerns of the many members and supporters were adequately ventilated and addressed,” said a statement signed by NDC National President Samuel Ofosu Ampofo.
Recently, the minority in Parliament has been heavily criticized for approving some ministerial nominees that many believe were unfit for the position by virtue of their performance during the background check.
The recent approval of Ken Ofori-Atta as Finance Minister saw some members of the NDC berating their representatives on the Nominating Committee for not being thorough and critical of the nominee.
A deputy rank member on Parliament’s Finance Committee, Isaac Adongo broke ranks with the Minority Caucus in the House for the approval of Ofori-Atta as Finance Minister.
He said he has many doubts about Mr. Ofori-Atta, insisting that his side should have rejected his nomination.
The Member of Parliament for North Tongu, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, who is a member of the Appointments Committee, also resigned from the committee for “personal reasons” and “principles”.
For many, the events demonstrate a crisis brewing within the caucus, but the NDC statement said that “the issues that have prompted public comment have been dealt with in a way that will promote and strengthen the cohesion of the party and all of its organs. “.
The party further called on all its supporters to stand together and work together to hold the Akufo-Addo government to account. Read the full statement below:
The Directorate of the Democratic National Congress has held a meeting with the Council of Elders of the party, and the entire Parliamentary Caucus after the concerns and misgivings that characterized the approval of the ministerial nominees of President Akufo-Addo.
The meeting was held in a healthy environment in which the concerns of the many members and supporters were properly aired and addressed.
Consequently, the party leadership wishes to assure each and everyone that the issues that have prompted public comment have been dealt with in a manner that will promote and strengthen the cohesion of the party and all of its organs.
We call on everyone to assure them of the need to put party unity and all interests first so that together we can hold the Akufo-Addo government to account even as we take steps to develop strategies towards the next general election.
LONG LIVE THE NDC
