The heads of the various government agencies and programs for youth under the Akufo-Addo administration have been promoting the achievements of their respective units, particularly the support of more than 2.5 million young Ghanaians.
They have said that President Akufo-Addo is to be commended for his commitment to empowering and growing youth.
Addressing the first edition of Nation Building Updates in Accra on Tuesday, September 222, 2020, the six Executive Directors (CEOs) of the National Youth Authority (NYA), the Youth Employment Agency (YEA), the Corps of Nation Builders (NABCO), The National Board of Small-Scale Industries (NBSSI), the National Service Scheme (NSS) and the National Entrepreneurship and Innovation Plan (NEIP) unanimously said that the Akufo-Addo administration has made unprecedented progress in bringing opportunity and hope to the youth of Ghana.
The theme of the event was “Leadership that Delivers Results for Youth.”
NABCO Executive Director Dr. Ibrahim Anyars emphasized that the government recognizes the challenging burden of unemployment at various levels of society and has appropriately initiated action through the NABCO program to address it.
He said that after a successful implementation of the program, NABCO is beginning the transition to permanent employment as the scheme approaches its second anniversary.
“This initiative is to help address graduate unemployment through a work-apprenticeship program, placing them on the job to gain experience, added value through training, and developing human capital so that apprentices are ready for permanent employment opportunities and become innovative in establishing their businesses. . And an exit scheme for additional exposure for trainees to enter the real world to explore opportunities, ”he added.
Referring to government interventions through her team, NBSSI Executive Director Ms. Kosi Afua Yankey-Ayeh said that the government has provided support to youth in various ways. One of those ways he pointed out is the disbursement of funds through the Business Support Scheme of the Coronavirus Relief Program (CAP), an initiative aimed at addressing the social and economic impact of COVID-19 on micro, small and medium-sized enterprises. She explained that through key government interventions, the NBSSI has been able to substantially reduce the high unemployment rate in the country, as well as maximize the contribution of small businesses to the economic and social development of the country.
YEA Executive Director Attorney Justin Kodua Frimpong detailed numerous interventions and policy initiatives introduced by his administration, which has created nearly 145,000 in the last 3 years. These include the YEA Jobcentre that connects job seekers with employers, the Directory of Craftsmen, Youth in Elite Sports, the School Support Program, and the Flagship Program, among many others. The CEO did not put aside the transformation agenda which has also seen the renovation of the Agency’s offices and the construction of new regional offices especially for the newly created regions. It also revealed that the YEA has saved more than 82 million GH ₵ since the arrival of a new administration starting in 2017. Speaking about the numerous government interventions through his unit, the CEO of the National Entrepreneurship and Innovation Plan (NEIP), attorney John Kumah noted that the government has financially supported 9,350 companies to make them competitive and viable. He also mentioned that the government is embarking on a series of projects that include training 10,000 students under the student entrepreneurship initiative and supporting 30 innovative entrepreneurs under the presidential launch program.
The program’s CEO Sylvester Mensah Tetteh highlighted the various youth-focused programs the government has embarked on through the NYA, saying the government has trained 3,000 youth in the digital marketing and entrepreneurship program in line and another 5,000 young people trained and with the appropriate skills development of youth entrepreneurship.
The head of the NSS, Mr. Mustapha Ussif, pointed out that his organization in recent years has been able to mobilize and deploy Ghanaian citizens who are 18 years or older for national development. He said that the NSS in the current administration has become efficient and proactive in undertaking projects to combat hunger, illiteracy, disease and unemployment in the country.
