Southampton’s summer signing Mohammed Salisu made his first Premier League appearance in a 2-1 loss to Wolverhampton Wanderers on Sunday.

The Ghanaian was a substitute in the 72nd minute in matchday 24 at St. Mary’s, replacing the injured Kyle Walker-Peters.

The league salute comes just three days after he debuted for the club in a 2-0 win over the same Wolves team in the FA Cup on Thursday.

Danny Ings opened the scoring for Southampton in Sunday’s tie, putting the ball into the net in the 25th minute but the visitors responded after the break with Rubén Neves (53rd minute) and Pedro Neto (66th minute) turning the tide to their favor.

Salisu will be looking for a third consecutive appearance in all competitions and a second consecutive Premier League outing when he hosts Chelsea on Saturday.

“It’s a perfect night, I’m very happy to be back with the team. The team really did well and worked hard, I’m very happy,” Salisu said after Thursday’s debut in the FA Cup.

“I am very excited to have a clean sheet, it is very important. It was a really big boost, we are going to give it all on Sunday. I think we should focus on the next round, fight hard together and I think I will go further.

“When we are on the field, we are all equal and we have to give everything. I really want to play more games and give the best of myself to the team.

The Ghanaian joined Southampton on a four-year contract from Real Valladolid in August last year. The French club Rennes was also interested in his services.

Due to an injury that followed from the La Liga fold, he had to delay joining the Saints for preseason training until after a month.

Even then, the club’s coach, Ralph Hasenhuttl, found the center-back in poor physical shape and left the 21-year-old out of the team of the day until December. The Accra-born made seven consecutive league bench appearances in the month before sustaining another injury just before the New Year.
