The Parliament’s Defense and Interior Committee summoned the IGP James Oppong Boanuh over the recent killings during and after the December 7 elections.
In an interview with Joseph Opoku Gakpo of JoyNews, committee chairman, Seth Acheampong said that as head of the electoral security working group, IGP Oppong Boanuh would have to report on the operations of the country’s security agencies.
The minority in parliament today requested that the IGP be convened and asked why 6 people have been killed and 17 others injured as a result of electoral violence in various constituencies.
According to NDC MPs, prior to the elections, IGP Oppong Boanuh assured the House that his men would practice professionalism to ensure that things did not go wrong during the elections.
In light of this, the Defense and Home Affairs Committee led by Mr. Acheampong has sent an invitation to the Inspector General of Police to appear before the Committee next week for a closed-door conversation.
“If you are doing an assessment of the entire deployment, we did well as a country and we should give ourselves a pat on the back. However, we should condemn the excesses.
“But as I always say, as you admonish and talk about the extremes and that the security service personnel must repress themselves at the slightest provocation, we must admonish ourselves as citizens to also ensure that we take our civic duties responsibly and do not go overboard. “, said.
Mr. Acheampong also came to the defense of security personnel following the minority’s demand to fire the IGP Oppong Boanuh for the deaths recorded during the elections.
According to the MPraeso legislator, the security services only defended themselves and the electoral officials from the illegitimate disturbances that some citizens were carrying out.
He pointed out that if the security personnel had not “reacted” the perpetrators of these violent acts would have dominated the State.
“I think the security men were in defense of the attack that was being waged against them. The first and immediate person went to defend themselves but unfortunately outside of that defense, lives fell. But let’s not shy away from the fact that an action resulted in such a reaction.
“We must, as a nation, live up to our responsibility. We have all supported, this dispensation of democracy and democracy is the rule of law, so if you do not understand anything, do not take the laws in your hand. If it does, I am not going to weaken the security service personnel, because if they had not stood up, the people would have defeated them, which means that they have defeated the State, ”he was categorical.
The chairman of the Defense and Interior Committee later praised the National Electoral Security Task Force (NEST) for its unwavering dedication to ensuring a peaceful election.
