Police Inspector General James Oppong-Boanuh has ordered that police officers performing duties in the 2020 Elections must wear the traditional police uniforms that are in the colors blue-black, black and police camouflage.

A statement issued by the Police Service indicated that no police officer wears beards, except those who have been advised by medical officers not to shave well.

Additionally, plainclothes officers from the Police Intelligence and Criminal Investigations Departments (CID and PID) will wear their approved open and undercover uniforms with their ID cards available for identification.

“The people seen in the video are sworn officers from the Ghana Police Service, who participated in special operations on a road march in the Upper East region. The brown uniform and headdress that some of them wear are training clothes.

“In light of public inquiries into the police uniforms to be used for this year’s presidential and parliamentary elections, the Inspector General of Police, Mr. James Oppong-Boanuh, has ordered that all police officers wear the uniforms traditional police, which are blue – black, black and police camouflage; either office or operational clothing with the appropriate headdress for police functions. Plainclothes officers from the Police Intelligence and Criminal Investigations Departments (CID and PID), however, will wear their approved open and undercover uniforms with their ID cards available for identification.

“The IGP has further mandated that no police officer wear a beard, except those who have been advised not to shave by medical officers, backed by the document ‘Shave with excuse’.

“The public must bear in mind that any police officer wearing clothing that is not permitted for electoral tasks would be engaging in professional misconduct, which is subject to disciplinary procedures.”
