IGP ensures greater security in the Volta region

The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Mr. James Oppong-Boanuh, has said that there will be increased security in the Volta region during the December elections.

He said that many security details had already been deployed in the region, following the disruptive activities of alleged separatist groups, adding that with some hotspots already identified in the region, the need to reinforce security there was paramount.

“Apart from these deployments, you can be sure that more security men will be dispatched to the Volta region before and after the elections to ensure that there is peace at all times. I urge the public to be assured that there will be sufficient security. in the Volta Region, ”he said.

The IGP gave the guarantees during a visit to the region last Tuesday to assess the capabilities of the police in the region in the run-up to the December 7 general elections.

Speaking to reporters after a simulation exercise conducted by the police, Mr. Oppong-Boanuh said that the operational readiness of the police to maintain peace and security needed to be assessed from time to time.

“We are doing this with the support of our colleagues from the other security agencies, including the Ghana Immigration Service, the Ghana National Fire Service, the Ghana Prison Service and the Customs Division of the Ghana Tax Authority. , with the army helping us with a quick response in other situations, “he added.

The simulation exercise portrayed a possible scenario of violence that could occur on Election Day and the response of the Ghana Police Service to the situation.

Hot spots

There are currently 321 hotspots identified in the Volta region, with 66 of them led by the Ketu South constituency.

The IGP said that in addition to making provisions for the hotspots already identified, “we also assume that any place could at any time become a hotspot as far as the election is concerned.”

Appeal

While urging the public to keep the peace during the election period, Mr. Oppong-Boanuh said that whoever has a complaint should address it through authorized legal means and not take the law into their own hands.

He was accompanied on the visit by the Director General in charge of Services, Police Commissioner (COP) Mr. George Alex Mensah, and the Director General of Operations, COP Mr. Kwaku Boadu Peprah.

The team also paid a courtesy visit to the Volta Regional Minister, Dr. Archibald Yao Letsa, and met with the Asogli heads of state.
