The Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) has dismissed fuel smuggling allegations from its Customs Division.
A statement dated September 3, 2020 and signed by GRA Deputy Communications and Public Affairs Commissioner Florence Asante asked the general public to ignore “negative claims” circulating on social media allegedly made by a broadcast station. private radio.
Presenting the facts of the matter, GRA said that “a vessel by the name ‘MT Randl’ that was” transporting fuel from Togo to Ivory Coast in May 2020 was intercepted at Takoradi. “
The statement indicated that said vessel was escorted out of Ghanaian territorial waters because “it was in poor condition and could represent an environmental hazard.”
Relevant agencies, including the Ghana Navy, the Ghana Maritime Authority (GMA), and GRA’s Customs Division in Takoradi, escorted the ship outside of Ghana’s borders.
The Authority further narrated the situation surrounding the interception of another vessel, ‘Dende’ by the Ghana Maritime Authority and the Western Naval Command of the Ghana Navy in June.
It said: “The ‘Dende’ that was transporting some 50,000 liters of fuel was stopped and the fuel unloaded to avoid contamination. The ship ‘Dende’, along with the fuel, is currently in the custody of the Ghana Navy at the Western Naval Base. Investigations are currently being carried out in the case of the arrest of ‘Dende’ and the result will be made public ”.
