A debate held for parliamentary candidates in the Ayawaso West Wuogon constituency deviated from the expected end after some actions by current Member of Parliament Lydia Seyram Alhassan.

The debate that was organized by 3FM of Media Generale, on November 27, 2020, was between Lydia Seyram Alhassan of the NPP, John Dumelo of NDC and the independent candidate Richard Mawuli Amegatsi.

Scheduled to start around 8 am, the debate was long delayed following the late arrival of PNP candidate Lydia Alhassan.

A few minutes into the debate, when the incumbent deputy had the opportunity to speak about her work since taking office, she made some comments that angered NDC candidate John Dumelo.

Speaking specifically about the controversies that arose after John Dumelo was asked to stop dredging sewers in the municipality, Lydia Alhassan, while speaking in the local dialect, said that “you don’t get up and start doing things. If you are a deep thinker, you will find that people just don’t get up and start dredging gutters.

John Dumelo, who did not take the comments lightly, demanded an apology and retraction from the MP, who also vehemently refused to do so.

Making further attempts to register his displeasure, Mr. Dumelo proceeded to leave the scene and abandoned the debate, however, he rescinded it after the hosts’ interventions.

Lydia Alhassan further prompted her followers to yell at John Dumelo when he tried to leave.

She constantly screamed, “Away, away, she’s running away.”

Justifying her comments that were described as insulting and unpleasant, Lydia Alhassan further said “if you’re doing something, you have to think about it, that’s what I’m trying to say. You have to ask questions about it first. So it’s not an insult. “

In a charged atmosphere, Dumelo visibly angry also replied “you can’t insult me here, that’s unacceptable. You were late and you only come to insult me … “

The debate came to an end without Lydia Alhassan’s apology.
