The standard-bearer of the Progressive People’s Party (PPP), Brigitte Dzogenuku, has blamed the recent attempts by western Togolanders to take over the Volta region on the lack of jobs for young people.

“Jobs are very important because all those young people who got up at dawn to set up barricades in the Volta Region, if they had jobs to do, do you think any of them would have had time to do what they did?” was asked on the AccraFM morning show on Monday, October 28, 2020.

“The Bible says, ‘The devil finds work for idle hands.’ People think bad things when they are inactive. Therefore, employment is the most important thing for the PPP, ”he told Kwabena Prah Jr when asked about the priorities of his party’s manifesto.

“Many young people are unemployed and, therefore, we are very interested in creating jobs,” he added.

Meanwhile, the Ghanaian government has said it has identified and persecuted those who finance the rebels in West Togo.

“Yes, we know where the funding comes from and the various agencies are moving as part of a comprehensive program to confront all this phenomenon.

“And we are also moving to deal with their funding sources and the people who, we believe, are associated with the funding of this group,” Information Minister Kojo Oppong Nkrumah said at a press conference on Sunday, September 27. 2020.

He said that “the key players, who have been identified as ultimately responsible for these events, are also on the watch list of the security agencies and are really wanted at this time.

“In the next few days, the security agencies will publish some photos and reveal the identities of the people involved,” Nkrumah added.

The Ofoase Ayirebi MP has also denied any government involvement or support for the rebels.

Speculations in that regard are “outright lies,” Oppong Nkrumah said.

“We don’t want to believe that there are political groups behind this.

“Here are those who, as you have heard, suggest that it seems that there are some political groups behind what is happening.

“We don’t even want to go down that path,” he said.

Oppong Nkrumah also denied claims that there were intelligence failures by the security agencies in regards to Friday’s attacks by the secessionist group in the Volta region.

One of the militants died in the takeover attacks that some Togolanders block the entrances and exits of the Volta region, which the rebels consider their autonomous and independent nation.

“There were no intelligence failures.

The direct aspect of what the intelligence suggested these people wanted to do was contained by the security agencies.

The intelligence was in the sense that they intended to, for example, blow up and burn down the entire market, attack sensitive facilities like Akosombo Dam, Adomi Bridge and some sensitive facilities, ”said Mr. Oppong Nkrumah.

“The first response was to ensure that these facilities were insured and the analysis of the agencies was that, by doing them successfully, these people had no choice but to make these roadblocks.

“The intelligence agencies did a good job.

“They took steps to prevent the scariest parts of that intelligence.”

On Friday, Volta’s regional minister, Dr. Archibald Letsa, denied supporting secessionist groups in the region, as some of the Togolan people allegedly claimed.

“That’s ridiculous,” Dr. Letsa said of the assertion repeated by legislator Kobina Mensah Woyome.

“Valentina, I don’t want to answer that question because it’s ridiculous.

“We have been dealing with these groups since we took office in 2017. How do I know about them? How do I support them? Were they able to provide any evidence?

“For the love of God, I am the president of the regional security council and have had to deal with this group since 2017,” Dr. Letsa said on ClassFM’s 505 news program on Friday, September 25, 2020.

Meanwhile, the deputy from South Tongu had claimed that one of the secessionists had told him over the phone that they had the support of Dr. Letsa.
