Emmanuel Ohene, chair of the Integrated Customs Management System (ICUMS) implementation team, says the government exceeded its revenue target in August and November 2020 from ports.
He attributed the development to the introduction of the Integrated Customs Management System (ICUMS).
Ohene, who is also the Deputy Commissioner for Customs in charge of the Accra Sector Command, said the feat was accomplished despite the negative impact of the coronavirus on the global shipping business.
He said that an amount of GH ¢ 1,200 million was made monthly since the introduction of ICUMS.
“The collection of Tema in this month of November has exceeded its objective. In August, ICUMS was responsible for the revenue target being exceeded, ”he said.
Mr. Ohene said that ICUMS successfully integrated with the Driver Vehicle Licensing Authority across the country, despite the difficulties associated with acquiring historical data.
He said ICUMS provided more than 7,000 tracking devices for monitoring cargo in transit, leading to stopping the connection of temporary escorts on cargo in transit.
Ohene said the second phase of ICUMS was expected to be completed by the first quarter of 2021.
He urged the business public to be patient while minor issues with Integrated Customs Management that had prevented users from experiencing all the benefits were addressed.
The Deputy Commissioner said that the Integrated Customs Management system had its checks and balances on the supervising officers at the various points of operations of the system, ensuring that undue delays do not arise as a result of officers’ misbehavior.
“There is a performance management system in ICUMS that monitors how long a statement is kept,” he added.
