Ian Wright believes that Arsenal’s biggest downfall is the fact that they rely too heavily on Kieran Tierney.
The Sky Sports expert claims Arsenal cannot “function” without him, following his notably mediocre performance against Crystal Palace.
The 23-year-old missed the Gunners’ 0-0 Premier League draw with the Eagles on Thursday, raising concerns about Arsenal’s ability to act without their star man.
Tierney was withdrawn just two hours before the game in North London with a muscle problem.
He is expected to undergo a series of scans on Friday to determine if he will be available for Arsenal’s game against Newcastle United on Monday.
If Tierney is ruled out of the game, Wright fears Arsenal will provide another lackluster performance.
Wright says Arsenal’s creativity must come from “elsewhere” while Tierney is injured.
“One player makes a big difference and I think it’s a bit of a concern because you take him off the team and that side doesn’t work,” said the Highbury hero when asked if Arsenal are too dependent on Tierney, “Wright said. The Mirror.
And when we talk about the way Kieran Tierney goes up and down, and we talk about the full 90 minutes, he never stops and that’s why.
‘You look at someone like [Pierre-Emerick] Aubameyang today, he didn’t get the opportunities he normally has because Kieran Tierney normally shows things in and around the area.
‘It didn’t really happen today on either side with the same number of crosses when Kieran Tierney is playing. It has to come from another place.
“ I think the set pieces today, when you consider that Arsenal have a set pieces coach, the balls that came in were very good, they weren’t being attacked very well.
“ Those are the things you don’t do well when you try to play your game, you have to find another way. ”
Tierney has been one of Arsenal’s most impressive players in their recent resurgence, providing Mikel Arteta’s side with one goal and two assists in their last three league games.
Tierney has also played a crucial role on Arsenal’s defensive line, managing five clean sheets with a 64 percent tackle success rate.
Arteta will find out if his team will face Newcastle on Monday without Tierney after his MRI.
Arsenal are desperate to score as many points as they can to move up the Premier League table and their absence could hamper their progress.
The Gunners are currently 11th with 24 points, a total of 12 points behind leaders Manchester United.
