Legendary Real Betis forward Joaquín has mocked Barcelona manager Ronald Koeman and insists he wouldn’t even hire him as a manager after playing with him in six unfortunate months in Valencia.
Joaquín, now 39 and still strong at Betis, was at the peak of his powers at Valencia between 2006 and 2011, but did not enjoy the six months that Koeman was at the helm of the team.
Despite winning the Copa del Rey, Koeman was fierce in his wiping out of the team, selling off many players in an attempt to fix financial problems behind the scenes.
That didn’t sit well with the players and, as Joaquin prepares to face his former Real Betis coach against Barcelona this week, he admits that he will not greet Koeman that night.
“It wasn’t the most beautiful experience of my sports career,” Joaquín said in El Larguero about working with Koeman. ‘It was not a pleasant experience, but as I always say: you have to live with everything and that happened at that time.
‘I don’t want to talk about this issue because honestly what happened there hurts me, I had a bad time.
When asked by a presenter if he would name him Betis coach if he were the club’s president, Joaquín replied: ‘Not even as a kit man!’
Then he continued: ‘I turned the page, we told each other everything. Fortunately, it didn’t last long and we were able to save the year by finishing as worthily as possible because the year was difficult. ‘
‘[This weekend], he is not going to greet me and I am not going to greet him. ‘
Barcelona are currently languishing in 12th place in LaLiga, albeit with fewer games than most of their rivals.
However, two wins in their games at hand would still place them fourth at the highest, and two losses in their first six games have already built up pressure on Koeman.
Meanwhile, Betis have won four and lost four in a reversed start to the season with Manuel Pellegrini, but are hoping to surprise against Barça this weekend.
