Gianluigi Donnarumma gave an important clue about his future by stating that he wants to stay at AC Milan for a considerable time.
The goalkeeper has been the star of AC Milan this season and played a crucial role in Sunday’s 2-0 win over Fiorentina to maintain his undefeated start to the league season and open a five-point gap at the top of the Serie TO.
Donnarumma’s contract expires in June 2021, but the 21-year-old has eased fears of a departure from San Siro by stating that his manager Mino Raiola will soon discuss new terms with the club.
The shooting stopper told DAZN over the weekend: ‘My agent will speak to the club, no problem.
“I want to stay in Milan for a long time, but we will see what the club decides. I want to enjoy this moment as much as I can. ‘
Donnarumma has kept four clean sheets in nine games for Milan so far this season, although one of his most impressive performances came against Fiorentina on Sunday.
Even without the Zlatan Ibrahimovic talisman, the Rossoneri took big strides in the game and put themselves two goals ahead in the first half through Alessio Romagnoli and Franck Kessie. The latter also missed a penalty later in the opening period to deny Milan a greater lead.
But the Serie A leaders were in debt to Donnarumma in the second period, who made a crucial stop against Franck Ribery to deny La Viola a route back to the game.
The 21-year-old goalkeeper also made an impressive low save in the second half from Fiorentina captain German Pezzella, who tried to pass him from a corner.
Donnarumma’s performance won the applause of Fiorentina manager Cesare Prandelli, who used to coach the Italian national team, who described the role of the Milan goalkeeper in his team’s defeat as “crucial”.
Prandelli stated: ‘(Gianluigi) Donnarumma made two crucial saves. We have to start over from there. If he hadn’t saved (Frank) Ribery’s shot, we could reopen the game. ‘
Despite being just 21 years old, Donnarumma has surpassed 200 appearances for Milan in all competitions since his debut in 2015.
The goalkeeper is also vice captain Rossoneri and wore the armband in the first three games of the current Serie A season, keeping a clean sheet in all of them.
Donnarumma has also been capped 21 times for Italy and is Roberto Mancini’s first choice in goal.
