I waited 10 years to win a VGMA trophy – Celestine Donkor | General entertainment

After years of painfully watching her colleagues climb to the podium and collect trophies at the Vodafone Ghana Music Awards (VGMA), gospel artist Celestine Donkor had given up hope of winning anything.

In 2009, she had high expectations, but was very disappointed when she and her colleague Philipa Baafi’s song, Go High, failed to win an award that included Best Collaboration of the Year and had since measured it for VGMAs. .

However, this year, there was a certain stir around her and some hope that this time it would come true when she picked up two awards, Best Female Vocal Performance and Gospel Song of the Year with her song Agbebolo (Bread of Life) at 21 edition of the VGMA held on August 28 and 29 at the Grand Arena of the Accra International Conference Center.

Speaking to Graphic Showbiz recently after breaking its VGMA curse, Celestine said it had been a 10-year wait to win at the most prestigious scheme for musicians in the music industry.

“It has been exactly 10 years since I got my first nomination and a decade later I am winning these awards. I predicted that I would win because I knew I had worked hard and God was going to crown my efforts, so it doesn’t surprise me at all.

“I am very excited about the support that has been given to my brand all these years and I want to ensure that there will be more and better work from me,” she said.

Aside from Gospel Song of the Year, Celestine had also been tipped to win Diana Hamilton’s Gospel Artist of the Year, but said she was pleased with the result.

“That’s the opinion of the people who think I worked really hard in the year in review and I can’t envy them for that. However, I think all the nominees in the category could have won it, so I have no problem with that. ,” she said.

It has been a long road for Celestine Donkor, who started out as a backup singer and has gradually grown into a strong force in the gospel music sector. However, her current success did not come on a silver platter when she revealed that her administration had to moderate to get her brand to where it is now.

The year 2020 has definitely been a good one for Celestine, who also won Best Gospel Artist at the National Gospel Music Awards and 3Music Awards held earlier in the year.
