The Uruguayan said it was the right time to leave the Camp Nou after signing for Diego Simeone’s team earlier this week.
Luis Suárez revealed that he felt the need for “fresh air” before leaving Barcelona when he scored two goals in a remarkable debut for Atlético de Madrid.
Suárez entered the Wanda Metropolitano in the 70th minute with Atleti 3-0 against Granada thanks to goals from Diego Costa, Ángel Correa and Joao Félix, while Saúl Niguez had missed a penalty.
An impressive cameo followed, with Suarez scoring a brilliant double after providing an assist to fellow substitute Marcos Llorente.
Suárez also won a penalty for Atlético, before a VAR check reversed that decision.
The 33-year-old was deemed to have exceeded the requirements in Barcelona as the Catalan club looks to rebuild under Ronald Koeman, but Suárez believes the time was right to move on.
“Very good, very happy for the debut, for the three points,” he said. Movistar. “When you debut and help the team with goals, you are always happy.
“It is a time when I needed fresh air, it is important to change it and accept it.
“I come to a club that has given me a spectacular welcome, the atmosphere is very good from the beginning and that is reflected on the field.”
Before Suarez stole the show, Joao Félix had made an impressive display by accompanying Costa up front, having scored Correa’s goal before entering the roster himself.
“We feel good about ourselves. We have completed a great game, scoring many goals and creating many chances,” the Portuguese international told Atleti club media.
“We have to continue like this. I feel good. I am happy and I enjoy. Things are going well.
“This was only the first game, but we want to complete a very, very good season. We are working towards that. We started today and we have to continue against Huesca.”
Meanwhile, Costa was excited at the prospect of forming a tough partnership with Suárez, joking: “One of us bites and the other kicks.”
Atlético will face two games over the next six days as they continue their La Liga campaign: an away game against Huesca on Wednesday before returning home to Villarreal on Saturday.
