It has been a sad Thursday morning for the entire African continent as the former president of Ghana passes into eternity.
The news of his death is spreading rapidly throughout the world who have met the charismatic leader.
Ghanaian celebrity Shatta Wale has reacted to the death of the Ghanaian leader.
According to Wale, some prophets in the country will soon claim that they saw God reveal death to them on December 31, 2019.
“I know a Prophet, he will come out and say he said it on December 31, 2019 that a great Ghanaian hero will die in 2020 … p3333 will come! We are waiting for you … Azaaaa asofo) ”, he wrote on his Facebook page.
Rawlings was seen as an advocate for the poor, but came under fire for alleged human rights abuses.
He died in a hospital in the capital, Accra, after a brief illness.
A week of national mourning has been announced in Ghana for the country’s oldest leader, who oversaw the transition to multi-party elections in what is now one of the most stable democracies in Africa.
John Mahama, presidential candidate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), founded by Rawlings, has announced that he will suspend the campaign for next month’s elections.
The son of a Scottish farmer and a Ghanaian mother, Rawlings entered the Ghana Air Force and graduated in 1969.
A decade later, as a senior air force officer, he overthrew a military government and handed power over to a civilian leader.
He oversaw the execution of several former heads of state and army generals for corruption, but expressed some regret over the killings. The subsequent execution by shooting of Supreme Court judges also left a stain on his legacy.
