The deputy general secretary of the ruling New Patriotic Party, lawyer Obiri Boahen, has rejected calls that are being made to the government to involve members of secession groups emerging from the Volta region in a negotiation.

With the recent attacks carried out by members of the separatist movement, some observers, including security experts, have insisted on the government to convene them to a negotiating table.

But speaking in an interview with Okay FM’s Kwame Nkrumah Tikese monitored by GhanaWeb, the PNP deputy scribe shared his disagreement, noting that calls for separation and the resulting attacks, unlike what is being experienced in other jurisdictions, are criminals.

“I do not agree completely. What is happening now is a crime, it is nothing like the Catalans and the incidents in Spain. This is not like the province of Casamance in Senegal, it is not like what is happening in the English-speaking area of Cameroon. This is a crime, the commission of a crime. Pure and simple. “

He explained that the leader of the Homeland Study Group that is leading the secession, Mr. Charles Kudzordzi, also known as Papavi Hogbedetor, who hails from Keta, is fighting for the wrong direction as the Keta area was never part of Trans Volta Togoland, which became a part of Ghana after the 1956 plebiscite.

“Let me put that on the record for Papavi and his people who are from Keta; Keta has never been part of Trans Volta Togoland. It has never been a German colony. The German colonies that split between Great Britain and France after WWII and then became part of Ghana after the 1956 plebiscite, never included Keta. If they talk about Hohoe and Ho that’s fine, but Keta was not a part.

Obiri Boahen, who has already accused the NDC of participating in secessionist activities, said that it is necessary to question why the disintegration upheavals are only limited to the Volta region, as the former western Togo runs through various areas of the country including parts of the Oti region and other parts of the north of the country.

However, he expressed his joy at the number of convictions that have come from the leaders of the Volta Region and stressed that the call for the separation of the area is something that does not have the support of the majority of the people in the area.
