Ramon Abass, also known as Hushpuppi, has hired a top criminal defense attorney, Loius Shapiro, to represent him at his trial in the United States, where he faces charges related to fraud and money laundering.
Hushpuppi hired Shapiro after prominent Chicago attorney Gal Pissetzky and California-based criminal defense attorney Vicki Podberesky retired as his attorneys. The duo had accused the former Instagram celebrity of refusing to communicate with them.
After a judge granted his withdrawal from the case on February 22, a request was granted on February 25 to obtain approval from Mr. Shapiro as Hushpuppi’s new defense attorney.
Premium Times reported that Mr. Shapiro, who earned his law degree from Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law, began his career with New York State Attorney General Elliot Spitzer.
He also worked in various agencies, including the Immigration Detainee Unit of the Legal Aid Society and was secretary of the federal office of public defenders in Los Angeles. Mr. Shapiro, a certified criminal law specialist by the California State Bar, serves as an attorney for the Federal Criminal Justice Law Trial Panel for the Central District of California.
