Leading telecommunications giant Huawei Technologies has launched today, October 22, 2020 in Accra, the sixth edition of its global flagship Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative, ‘Ghana Sky Seeds for the Future’.

The program, in partnership with the Ministry of Communication, the Ministry of Education, UNESCO, the National Council of Tertiary Education, the University of Ghana, the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) and the University of Communications Technology of Ghana (GCTU) looks forward to giving 50 college students in STEM the opportunity to broaden their reach in ICT while advocating for more female participation.

The intensive 5-day experience that will take place online, will introduce students to new technologies, equip them with the necessary skills so that they can identify and take advantage of new opportunities in ICT, while offering them the opportunity to meet and connect with the best ICT professionals in the tech space.

This year, recipients will experience a virtual tour of Huawei’s headquarters in China as advanced courses such as IoT, cybersecurity, digital commerce, digital economy, cross-cultural management, strategic management, leadership skills and other open ecosystem trainings are taken. .

Participants will also have the opportunity to experience Chinese culture and Huawei’s high-tech labs through various scheduled virtual tours, as well as live interactions with industry leaders in Ghana and China.

Speaking at the event, the Minister of State in charge of Tertiary Education, H.E. Kwesi Yankah applauded Huawei for the effort made to ensure that the 2020 Seeds for the Future Program succeeds despite the difficult times we are in.

“The government is grateful for Huawei’s support to technical universities across the country in capacity development, promoting cutting-edge projects such as 5g technology, cloud computing, and routing and switching, and as a result highly appreciates the effort.” he said, as he pleaded with the beneficiaries to take the project seriously and took the opportunity to learn and gain the necessary skills to be useful to themselves and to the country as a whole.

Diallo Abdourahamane, Country Director, UNESCO Ghana, congratulated Huawei for well driving the Seeds for the Future 2020 program in Ghana and contributing its share to the development of ICTs across borders.

“As an organization that works with its member states to bring knowledge to inclusive, open and participatory societies, UNESCO not only applauds their efforts, but also recognizes Huawei as a partner in building informed societies.

Professor Felix Asante, ProVC for Research and Development, University of Ghana, further indicated that Huawei’s seeds for the future are being started in a very key way and much appreciated by UG and, as such, they hope that through this collaboration, the Ghana’s digitization agenda and UG how a public university will be improved. “UG is very happy to be a part of this launch and we will be delighted to work with you to develop more ideas to support STEM in Ghana,” he said.

Adding up what the partners had reiterated previously, Eng. Dr. Abdul-Rahman, Dean of the KNUST Faculty of Electrical and Computer Engineering, mentioned that ICT is the cornerstone of the currency in which we conduct business transactions and engage to citizens, hence its relevance for the current development of any country.

Therefore, Huawei’s involvement in making it possible for higher education students to gain quality ICT skills is highly significant and this is the kind of partnership KNUST hopes to engage students to be relevant in the economy.

The Chargé d’Affaires of the People’s Republic of China in Ghana urged the students to take the program seriously, and urged the students to seize the opportunity to develop the Ghana ICT talent pool and broaden their horizons.

Edward Hou, Vice President of Huawei Technologies Co., Ltd, reiterated that Huawei’s Seeds for the Future initiative was introduced due to the enormous potential discovered in collaboration between industry and academia.

According to him, through this program, Huawei intends to cultivate future-ready talents and encourage young people in Africa and around the world to communicate, challenge and discuss ideas in an intercultural environment while creating more brilliance for technology and civilization.

Mr. Tommy Zhouwei, Managing Director of Huawei Ghana, encouraged the female participants to seize the opportunity and consider pursuing careers in the telecommunications space, as their presence and contribution is sorely needed in the sector.

He mentioned that in the heat of the pandemic this year, Huawei presented its Study at Home program for its ICT Academies that benefited 2000 students, of which more than 600 were certified as Huawei HCIA professionals with more than 500 university students who They also benefited from Huawei’s Free 5G Training.

Huawei’s Seeds for the Future program has benefited 60 university students. This year’s program will train 50 more, bringing the total number of beneficiaries to 110.
