Current estimates from the World Health Organization (WHO) have revealed that 1.35 million deaths recorded annually are from traffic accidents.

Our Manifesto: This is what YEN.com.gh believes in

In Ghana, the National Road Safety Commission (NRSC) indicated that between 1991 and 2018, approximately 46,284 people lost their lives in traffic accidents.

Traffic accidents or massacres in Ghana seem to be on the rise as the years go by.

In March 2020, data from the Ghana Police Service’s Department of Transportation and Motor Traffic (MTTD) revealed that road accidents killed 202 people across the country.

It represents an 18% increase from the 171 deaths recorded in February 2020. The March figures increased due to the Kintampo accident on March 10.

The coronavirus disease, along with the blockade of some parts of Ghana, saw a decrease in road accidents because movement in and out of the city was restricted to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

In a report presented by theghanareport.com, the Director of Education, Research and Training of the MTTD, Superintendent Alex Obeng, confirmed that in 2019, 115 Ghanaians died in traffic accidents compared to the same period in 2020, which witnessed a significant reduction in terms of deaths to 69.

Comparing the MTTD statistics for the same period, vehicles involved in crashes fell from 1,346 in 2019 to 759 in 2020, a significant drop of 44 percent.

It is sad to know that since road transport is the cheapest form of transport for Ghanaians, the recorded cases of road carnivals are curiously high compared to other modes of transport in the country.

Traffic accidents have seen the death of many people, from infants to the very old, as well as celebrities such as Ebony, Suzzy Williams, Terry Bonchaka, etc.

Most of the causes of these accidents are the result of careless drivers, speeding while driving, non-compliance with traffic regulations, undue overtaking by overconfident drivers.

Road accidents can also be caused by poorly maintained vehicle breakdowns while on the move, using mobile phones while driving, and driving drunk.

Most of these accidents that occur on our roads can be avoided if drivers adhere to some basic rules of road traffic, such as driving within their designated lanes and within proper speed limits.

YEN.com.gh reported many accidents on some accident-prone roads such as Accra-Kumasi, the Kasoa-Cape Coast Highway, the Accra-Tema Highway, the Kintampo Highway and other roads scattered throughout the country.

Some of these accidents, which occur as a result of a head-on collision such as the one on the Kasoa-Cape Coast highway, left five dead and seven injured. According to an eyewitness who was a passenger in one of the affected cars, the driver of the vehicle that collided with his was driving at maximum speed while trying to overtake another.

On Thursday, September 10, 2020, an accident occurred on the Accra-Tema highway after a truck loaded with beer had brake failures. The accident resulted in the death of one person and injury to others.

In an attempt to ensure that these road accidents are stopped, it is important that both the government and other stakeholders involved in the transportation sector critically examine all factors causing accidents on our roads.

The government should seek to prosecute drivers of vehicles who cause accidents on the roads as a result of their disobedience to traffic regulations.

Transport unions at the various bus terminals must also ensure that their long-haul vehicles have additional drivers on board. This would ensure that when one driver is fatigued and drowsy, the other driver takes over and takes the passengers to safety.

Additionally, drivers should ensure that they keep their eyes on the road at all times and avoid using their cell phones and other devices while driving.

All drivers must also ensure that they do not drink alcoholic beverages before getting behind the wheel of vehicles to take passengers to their destinations.

It is pertinent that each and every driver check their vehicle before starting it up. In addition to doing that on a daily basis, it is wise to know that routine checks of the vehicle by professionals would help identify any problems with the vehicle.

It is advisable for all drivers to adhere to all road safety regulations carefully outlined by the National Road Safety Commission to put an end to road accidents in Ghana as well as save the lives of valuable people.
