Southampton have joined Ghanaian giant Asante Kotoko SC as one of the international partners of the English Premier League.

Kotoko, winner of a record 23 league titles, is also one of the best supported teams in Ghana and has been the African champion twice, in 1970 and 1983.

The Porcupine Warriors said in a statement on social media that they were “elated” to announce the “groundbreaking” partnership that “seeks to connect Kotoko in Southampton and ensure sustainable development.”

While on their website, Southampton said they will “support the development of Asante Kotoko’s strategy for the Ghana Premier League both on and off the pitch.”

“Southampton will share their experience as an industry leading coach to help Asante Kotoko realize his ambition to build a sustainable Academy and a path to the first team, with remote support throughout the year complemented by regular visits to Ghana throughout the association of the club’s International Football Association team, “added the club.

“The partnership will include Academy staff exchange visits between the UK and Ghana, as well as opportunities for young players from Asante Kotoko to attend the annual UK Player Development camps and experience the UK Academy methodology. Southampton first hand when travel brokers open and travel safe.

“Southampton will also support the development of Asante Kotoko’s business and operational strategy through collaboration on key projects.”

Asante Kotoko CEO Nana Yaw Amponsah acknowledges that clubs have different financial challenges, but is confident that the connection will work.

“This partnership allows us to connect Asante Kotoko in Southampton in such a way that Kotoko functions like Southampton,” he said.

“Kotoko would have everything that Southampton has, but at a level that reflects our different budgets.

“I think with the experience and resources available at Southampton, we can take advantage of this and develop our setup to look and feel professional like the Saints.”

Mark Abrahams, Southampton Director of Community and Business Development, also looks forward to working with Kotoko.

“During these difficult times, we are delighted to have agreed a long-term partnership to work with Asante Kotoko,” he said.

“Nana Yaw has a clear vision for Asante Kotoko to be a self-sustaining soccer club both on and off the field. We look forward to working with him and his team to support its development.”
