Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has once again questioned the credibility of the standard-bearer of the Democratic National Congress (NDC), over the SHS Libre policy introduced by the Akufo-Addo government in 2017.
In an interview on a Sunyani-based radio station on Thursday, Dr. Bawumia said former President John Mahama cannot be trusted with politics as he fiercely criticized him when he was in government.
He stressed that Mr. Mahama’s promise to review the implementation of Free SHS lacks credibility as he did not believe in the realization of the policy in the first place.
“Mahama said that Free SHS is a hoax. He said it was 419 and he said it’s impossible. But after President Akufo-Addo successfully implemented it for the benefit of Ghanaians, he is now telling Ghanaians that he will expand it to private schools if Ghanaians vote for him.
“How can you say it will expand Free SHS when you don’t believe in it?” I ask.
The vice president then urged the Sunyani people and all citizens to ignore Mahama’s inconsistencies.
He noted that everyone should support President Akufo-Addo, because he is the initiator of the SHS Free policy and therefore knows how best to implement it.
Dr. Bawumia added that the government has invested heavily in infrastructure at the various schools in its quest to tackle the dual track system, which arose due to the overwhelming number of people accessing the second cycle schools due to the free SHS.
He said that some schools are ready to end the dual track system starting next academic year.
The first batch of Free SHS policy, enrolled in September 2017, successfully wrote their West African High School Certificate Exam (WASSCE) in August 2020.
