Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has once again questioned former President John Dramani Mahama’s credibility when it comes to Free SHS.

The former president was a fierce critic of Free SHS policy when it was promised by then-candidate Akufo-Addo, saying that Ghana was not ready for it.

However, following its successful implementation by President Akufo-Addo, former President Mahama has now made a U-turn and promises to expand it if he wins the December elections.

But Vice President Bawumia has questioned Mahama’s credibility and sincerity about the policy, insisting that he has no moral right to speak out about its implementation.

Speaking in an interview with Nimdie FM in Sunyani on Thursday, Dr. Bawumia said that Mahama’s promise to review the implementation of Free SHS lacks credibility because he did not believe in it when President Akufo-Addo and the PNP dreamed of mentioning it.

“How can you say it will expand Free SHS when you don’t believe in it?” Dr. Bawumia asked Mahama.

“Mahama said that Free SHS is a hoax. He said it was 419 and he said it’s impossible. But after President Akufo-Addo successfully implemented it for the benefit of Ghanaians, he is now telling Ghanaians that he will expand it to private schools if Ghanaians vote for him. “

“When Nana Akufo-Addo said she would implement Free SHS to make sure all children go to school for free, Mahama told Ghanaians that it was not possible and that if she had 2 billion CDs, she would not invest them in Free SHS ”.

The vice president urged the Sunyani people and Ghanaians in general to ignore Mahama’s inconsistencies and rather join Akufo-Addo, whom he said owns the Free SHS vision and knows how to implement it.

Dr. Bawumia added that the government has invested heavily in infrastructure in the various schools in its quest to confront the dual track system, which emerged due to the overwhelming number of people entering upper secondary school across the country due to the Free SHS.

He said that some schools are ready to end the dual track system starting next academic year.

The first batch of the Free SHS policy, enrolled in September 2017, successfully drafted their WASCEE final exams earlier this month.

Dr. Bawumia is currently in the Bono Region for a two day tour.
