Lionel Messi’s stint in Barcelona almost ended this summer. The conflict bubbling on the surface between Messi and former president Josep Maria Bartomeu eventually culminated in the Argentine requesting a transfer out of Barcelona.
That transfer request resulted in days of guessing what would happen, and it ended with Messi giving in because he didn’t want to end up on the court. Barça was not willing to play ball and Messi’s contract ends next summer.
So what will it take for Messi to convince himself this season to make Barcelona his home this year? According to a report from Marca, it depends heavily on both him and the team under Koeman, as well as the identity of the new president and his position on transfer policy and management functions.
Messi’s relationship with Ronald Koeman has yet to be severed, so as long as the new president seems willing to adjust the budget and allow flexibility, we could have Messi at Barcelona this season.
