Houssem Aouar has revealed that he is happy that he chose to stay in Lyon despite Arsenal’s interest.
The highly regarded midfielder was strongly linked to a move to Arsenal during the transfer window.
However, as the deadline approached, Aouar finally decided to stay in Lyon.
As reported by Get French Football News, when asked if his choice was simply between joining Arsenal or staying at Lyon, Aouar replied: ‘No, not necessarily. But it is true that in the end it was basically that. So I finally had to make a decision and I’m happy to stay here. ‘
There were suggestions that Arsenal could sign both Aouar and Thomas Partey, but in the end they only brought in the latter.
Aouar has a strong connection to Lyon having progressed through the ranks of the club’s academy before entering the first team.
The French club demanded 60 million euros (55.5 million pounds sterling) for the 22-year-old.
Aouar made his debut for France in Ukraine’s 7-1 win this week and provided two assists.
Arsenal remain interested in Aouar and it will be intriguing to see if they pursue a move for him in the future.
