Fraser Hornby raised his tally to 10 goals in 17 appearances for Scotland under-21s

Fraser Hornby is the all-time top scorer for the Scotland Under-21 team after his hat-trick in a 7-0 record win over San Marino.

David Turnbull, Barry Maguire, Connor McLennan and Harrison Ashby were also among the goals, as Scot Gemmill’s team raised their hopes of qualifying for the European Championship in Serravalle.

The Reims Hornby striker outpointed Scott Booth and Jordan Rhodes with his second before scoring 10 goals in 17 games.

The victory overshadows the 5-0 win over Finland in 1995 as the biggest U-21 triumph.

Scotland is one point behind Group 4 leader Czech Republic, one game short. Victory over Croatia at Tynecastle next month will guarantee a top two result and send Gemmill’s team to the top, before they finish the section in Greece five days later.

The nine group winners and the best runner-up qualify for the final, while the other eight second-place teams compete for four places.

Scotland had a new midfield following their win over the Czechs on Friday, with Ross McCrorie now on Steve Clarke’s senior squad, Allan Campbell suspended and Lewis Ferguson absent from the 19-man squad.

But they immediately took control and Hornby opened the scoring from the penalty spot in the 20th minute before goals from Turnbull and Maguire had the result beyond doubt at half-time.
