Residents of Ho Township have expressed resentment over the deployment of COVID-19 vaccines that arrived in the country for fear of side effects and conspiracy theories of depopulation of the black race.
They raised religious concerns and the possibility that the vaccine would alter their DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) among others.
Mr. Setriakor Gagakuma, Municipal Officer of Ho, National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) embarked on a campaign to demystify conspiracy theories built against the COVID-19 vaccine.
The campaign took place in the main central market, the various truck stations and some communities.
He explained to various audiences that the conspiracies were false and that, when spread out on the tape of empirical and scientific truths, they would not stand the test of time.
The Municipal Director, after dispelling the fears of the population, encouraged the groups not to be careful to adhere to the security protocols saying “it is our best bet until a permanent cure for the disease is formulated”.
He said that despite the advent of vaccines, the best remedy remains in the name of masking and social distancing, as any reckless lifestyle could jeopardize efforts to slow the spread of the virus.
Professor Fred Newton Binka, an epidemiologist and public health physician, said the theories are not based on empirical facts and must be disproved.
He explained that vaccines could not alter DNA, saying that vaccines communicated with immune cells to make proteins to attack the virus and also to kill them.
The former vice-chancellor of the University of Health and Allied Sciences (UHAS) said that the side effects were the same as those of other vaccines that children take, pain and swelling at the site, headache and nausea, diarrhea, weakness of the body , which sometimes lasted a while. maximum three days, they were normal characteristics.
“As for the sterility issue, it is unthinkable nonsense.”
