Some party supporters who are believed to be members of the NPP and NDC have separately fired upon the Savelugu police station to demand the release of a ballot box surrounded by controversy after Monday’s elections.

According to the protesters, the polls in police custody illegally and unnecessarily delayed the certification and declaration of electoral results in the constituency.

The sporadic shooting at the police station and its contents were strategically planned, as they fired at the station from all angles steadily for more than 20 minutes.

It took a combined police and military team to quell the violence while awaiting the reinforcement of security.

Some members of the security personnel had to run for refuge since they were not armed and had to call the Police Station of the North Region to reinforce the situation.

Personnel from the Anti-Terrorism Unit (CTU) and SWAT arrived within minutes of Tamale to support their colleagues in bringing calm.

Tension in the constituency is high even in the presence of strict security measures.
