The German international was left blank when Chelsea beat West Ham 3-0 at Stamford Bridge, but his coach was not worried.
Frank Lampard was “gutted” Timo Werner did not end Chelsea’s goal drought against West Ham, but he feels the floodgates will open soon.
Werner had a great chance to break a drought that now totals nine games, but crashed a shot off the crossbar after an excellent approach by N’Golo Kante.
The German international, who said tiredness was a problem, also had a good chance in the first half of the 3-0 win, but got the ball jammed underfoot and shot weakly at Lukasz Fabianski.
Not taking chances will hurt Werner, but Lampard is happy his player is getting into dangerous areas and feels that the goals will come.
“I’m heartbroken that Timo didn’t get his goal at the end,” Lampard said. “That would have been great for his confidence. He’s getting chances, so the goals will come.”
Lampard, who praised Thiago Silva, feels that RB Leipzig’s summer signing is in an adaptation phase that will exceed and show exactly why Chelsea spent £ 47.5 million ($ 64 million / € 52.2 million) for take it to the club.
“I’m not worried,” Lampard said on the club’s official website. “All forwards will want to be scoring goals, that’s why they are finally judged and that’s why Timo was a great acquisition for us because of the level of goals he has scored in recent years.
“He is a player in a new league and we have to give him time to calm down, but he takes positions regularly, scares the teams and gives them a problem.
“He’s not doing well at the moment, but the moment that changes, we are sure to see goals from Timo Werner.”
While Werner was left blank, although he received an assist, Tammy Abraham scored twice and Lampard was delighted with the English forward’s performance.
“It’s clearly good for your confidence,” Lampard said of Abraham. “You have to work for your goals and he worked for them today because he tried so hard. I wanted it to be a handful and to have energy and move the bottom line, which it did.
“Oli Giroud has been doing it for us in his own way and scoring goals, so today it was one more opposition decision to play Tammy and I’m satisfied with how he did it.”
