The Swiss coach saw his team concede a penalty in a questionable way, but was grateful that it wasn’t too costly
Borussia Dortmund manager Lucien Favre made the decision to impose a penalty on Lazio in a 1-1 draw in the Champions League on Wednesday.
After Raphael Guerreiro opened the scoring for Dortmund in the 44th minute, Lazio received a lifeline in the 67th minute after Nico Schulz fouled Sergej Milinkovic-Savic in the box as he was about to clear the ball.
Replays showed little contact between the two, as the Lazio midfielder apparently made the most of the incident. However, the penalty was allowed to stand, and Ciro Immobile made no mistake with his penalty.
Neither team could find a winner as Favre’s side secured their place in the knockout stages with one point, but the coach was left to regret what was a controversial penalty decision in favor of Lazio.
“We had the opportunity to score the second goal. Then we conceded an unnecessary penalty against us, which is not one,” Favre said. Sky After the match.
“That’s unbelievable. That’s theater, it’s in a pool. It’s exaggerating. But we move on to the next round. That’s the most important thing.”
Dortmund, who confirmed that star forward Erling Haaland will be offside until the new year before the game, suffered another injury late in the game with veteran center-back Mats Hummels forced off the field.
Club director Michael Zorc is hopeful Hummels will not join Dortmund’s growing injury list after speaking with the 31-year-old after the full-time whistle.
“I spoke to him briefly, we hope it was just a blow to his foot. We hope he can recover quickly and that his ligaments were not damaged,” Zorc said..
“We have some [injured] players in our hands and we hope he can play again this weekend. “
Next Saturday Dortmund will face Eintracht Frankfurt in the Bundesliga before completing their Champions League group campaign against Zenit in Russia next week.
Favre’s team has had an inconsistent season to date and is currently fourth in Germany’s top flight, four points behind the league leader and fierce rival Bayern Munich.
