Tottenham Hotspur enjoyed an excellent performance on Saturday.
José Mourinho’s men claimed their first victory in four Premier League games at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium as they put Leeds United to the sword.
Goals from Harry Kane, Son Heung-Min and Toby Alderweireld gave the Spurs all three points and a comfortable 3-0 victory.
The result brought Spurs to third place before the rest of the weekend’s Premier League games, but there was a stain on Mourinho’s men’s copybook in injury time.
Matt Doherty was sent off after a late challenge to Pablo Hernández earned him his second yellow card.
The Wolves summer signing has struggled since his move to the club, apparently uncomfortable with the demands of Mourinho’s tactic.
Doherty regularly played as a winger when he was at Wolves, but has routinely been told to play as a winger in a back four during his time in North London.
And Danny Mills, himself a former right-back, believes the 28-year-old is struggling with the role he’s playing.
Speaking after the game between the Spurs and his former team, he told Football Insider: “What we’ve seen with Doherty was three years at right back, then suddenly switch over and come and play like an absolute right. the back is a switch.
“It is and it is not difficult, it is a change that you have to make for sure, so it is not always easy. That is something you will have to work on and fix.
“It takes time, we have seen many, many times that the games get strong and fast and there are problems around COVID and international ruptures.
“There is not that much time to enter the training field and work with the players.
“We’ve only played 15 games this season, normally we’d be 20. You have to look at him and think ‘he’s a very, very good player and I think the best is yet to come from him.’
“A lot of this is due to the fact that managers and coaches have not had as much time in training camp as they would like.”
Harry Sherlock of GIVEMESPORT says …
Yes, this is great.
Doherty was ousted from the side by the form of Serge Aurier, as he missed a total of six games, including wins over Manchester City and Arsenal, and the draw with Chelsea.
The Republic of Ireland international is clearly a talented player and had a real impact on the Wolves game plan, often advancing and scoring goals.
He hasn’t been asked to do that at Spurs, where he needs to be a more disciplined and aggressive winger.
He has time on his side, but you have to think that he needs to start improving quickly or see Aurier take his place permanently.
