Tributes have also arrived from the business community. Ghana Merchants Union Association President Dr. Joseph Obeng says his death is a great blow to the business community.

“On behalf of the Ghanaian business community, I wish to extend my condolences to the family of the former President of the Republic of Ghana. It saddens our hearts to lose such a great leader. He was a people-centered leader protecting the vulnerable and business community. We will always remember this great leader, “he said.

The Ghana Merchants Union Association is the largest national union ever established under former President Jerry John Rawlings.

“Since its inception in 1989, GUTA has had to work with the government at that time headed by SE JJ Rawlings until the country returned to multi-party democracy. As the Head of State of the country after the 1992 elections, GUTA continued to work with President Rawlings and the incumbent government as always pushing the agenda of Ghanaian merchants. After leaving office, GUTA followed the exploits of the former president in his new role as a statesman, ”revealed Dr. Joseph Obeng.

Established in 1989 and incorporated by virtue of the Companies Law 1963 (Law 179), GUTA is an interest and pressure group, of a civil society nature, an apolitical and non-profit organization of the private sector. Its aim is to bring together all of Ghana’s merchant associations under one umbrella to champion the course of trade and advocate for the development and growth of trade in the country and beyond.

Meanwhile, President Nana Akufo-Addo along with his vice, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia signed the open book of condolences for the family of the late Jerry John Rawlings.

The president and his vice signed the book this afternoon when they visited the family of the late Jerry John Rawlings to sympathize with them.

Former President Rawlings died yesterday, November 12, 2020, at Korle-bu University Hospital after a brief illness.

In his tribute, President Akufo-Addo stated: “Your role in the establishment and development of the Fourth Republic as the most enduring Republic in our history is truly exceptional. Ghanaians appreciate your leadership in our nation and will remember you accordingly. For me, I really appreciate your friendship. Commander, goodbye and rest in peace in the bosom of the Almighty ”.
