Haruna Iddrisu doubts the credibility of the EC’s voter screening exercise

Minority Leader Haruna Iddrisu has called on the Electoral Commission (EC) to stand up and show credibility during the voter screening exercise.

The Commission will display the provisional voter registration at the 33,367 centers from September 18 to 25.

The minority leader said he was disappointed by the work of the Election Commission during the voter exhibition.

According to him, the EC should have taken advantage of the voter display to display its biometric verification devices before the December 7 elections.

“Ideally, each electoral college should have a BVD for the voter to identify himself, taking advantage of that team because it is the team that will be deployed for the election”

Iddrisu said that an adequate budget was allocated for the acquisition of BVD in amounts not less than 7,500.

He stressed that the standard should have been in the availability, presence, use and testing of the devices.

“What the EC is currently doing is more of a manual exercise where people just check their names,” he added.

The minority leader commissioned the EC to wake up from its slumber. Adding that Ghana has only one chance to preserve its democracy and that will be the holding of free, fair and credible elections.

It also expressed concern about the discrepancies in the figure recorded during the registration exercise and what the EC is showing.

“Now in the Tamale South constituency specifically, I have looked at the Bamvum Presby area where 769 registered voters were registered, we are seeing a display of 555 voters.

“A reduction of about 200, there are voters lost in the register,” he said.

Haruna Iddrisu said that the data collected by EC was not credible.

According to him, he has requested a national compilation of the discrepancies to guide his next possible action.
